DJ GHETTO FUNK

Erick Mondragon, better known as DJ Ghetto Funk, was born and raised in Mexico City. His journey into music began in high school, playing backyard shows in a punk band and playing music through his bass amp using a CD Player and IPod. Armed with funk CDs picked up at swap meets he would and still DJs between bands at shows in venues and backyard shows all around L.A. and O.C. Friends would joke that his style was “ghetto”, and since all he played was funk, the name DJ Ghetto Funk was born.

Staying true to his roots, Erick has never relied on a laptop for DJing. Instead, he’s built his reputation playing playing everywhere from clubs and venues to backyard parties-and even the occasional Italian mob gathering. One memorable highlight includes DJing a birthday party for The Offspring, where the soundtrack was all punk. His most innovative project is building a battery powered wireless DJ rig which he uses to walk around festivals, parties, bus stops, parking lots, art walks and much more, keeping people moving where they wouldn’t expect.

As a producer, Erick started with limited tools, using a Tascam tape recorder to create music with guitar and. bass. Over the years, he joined multiple bands and released three albums across different projects, gaining hands-on experience recording live to 12-inch tape. This foundation shaped his raw, authentic approach to music of all genres ranging from 1920 and Beyond.

Today, he continues to embrace analog production, rejecting computers in favor of hands-on equipment. Whether DJing, collecting sounds, or drawing inspiration from people and experiences encountered along the way, DJ Ghetto Funk is constantly curating his next release – waiting for the perfect moment to share it with the world.
