Maybellene Ryder is a Horseshoe Bender that never ends. The stylized Los Angeles
country music iteration of Canadian immigrant Kiana Keane’s earnest life work, Ryder
channels type-B glitz and glam, chipped nail polish, and a gaunt-of-fame wherein the
cracks lies the truth. She’s a backslider, a riddler, and a fiddler. She sings with lust and
resignation — one foot over the edge and one not far enough. Maybellene Ryder gets
dressed up to get undone and in the undoing she sings the apocalyptic cosmic country
truth: “Now it’s the morning after — I’m feeling a little outnumbered. All of the fallen
soldiers tell me we’re in for a wild year. So baby, let’s have another, live out our last
Horseshoe Bender — this river dries in warm weather, and we’ll call it quits in the
summer.”
